The Legion of Mary

“You are a movement of lay people who propose to make faith the aspiration of your life up to the achievement of personal sanctity” Pope John Paul II

“You know how much esteem and affection I have for you. I say you have anticipated the Vatican Council – the future apostolate of the Church” Bishop Fulton Sheen

If you have a need to learn more about the Catholic faith….
If you have a need to enrich your prayer life….
If you have a need to develop close Catholic friendships….
If you have a need to grow closer to Jesus and Mary…
Then come as a guest to a Legion of Mary meeting!
(The Immaculate Heart of Mary group meets on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm in Our Lady’s room and Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament group meets on Thursdays at 6:00 pm, in Our Lady’s room). There’s no obligation!

What is it?
The Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church, with well over 3 million active members in almost every country of the world. It have been active in India since 1964 in Bombay and has been approved by the last six Popes, and was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members.

What does it do?
Members become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a balanced program of prayer and service. Works include door to door evangelization, parishioner visitation, visitation of the sick and aged, prison ministry, crowd contact, religious education, visiting the newly baptized and First Holy Communion families, Home Enthronement, Pilgrim Virgin Statue rotations and meeting the other spiritual needs of the parish community.

Legionaries are under the guidance of a spiritual director named by the pastor.

The Legion is, in essence, an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor.

How does it work?
Members meet once a week for prayer, planning and discussion in a family setting. Then they do two hours of definite work each week in pairs and under the guidance of their spiritual director.

Who can belong?
The Legion of Mary is open to all Catholics who:

Faithfully practice their religion
Are animated by the desire to participate in the Church’s apostolate through membership in the Legion.
Are prepared to fulfill each and every duty which active membership in the Legion involves.
How do I start?
The first step is to be a guest at a meeting of the Legion of Mary. Guests are always welcome and can go on one of the work assignments with an experienced member if they choose. If there is no Legion of Mary in your parish, you can participate in a group in another parish until you can start one of your own with the assistance of other Legionaries and in cooperation with the pastor.

How can I get more information.
For more information, ask any member of the Legion of Mary or contact your parish office to obtain the name and telephone number of a point of contact for the nearest Legion of Mary Praesidium.

he Legion of Mary was founded by Frank Duff on 7th September 1921. This is a lay apostolic organization at the service of the Church under ecclesiastical guidance. Its twofold purpose is the spiritual development of its members and advancing the reign of Christ through Mary.

The Legion which is to be found in almost every country in the world has nearly over 3 million active members and many more auxiliary (praying) members.

The Parish of St. Peter’s has two Praesidia (i.e. a unit of the Legion of Mary) One is the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the other is Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. Each Praesidium has around 15 members.

The duty of each Legionary is:
1. Punctual and regular attendance at the weekly meetings of the praesidium furnishing thereof an adequate and audible report on the work done.
2. Daily recitation of the Catena
3. Performance of a substantial active legionary work, in the spirit of faith and in union with Mary.
4. Absolute respect for the confidential nature of many matters discussed at the meeting or learned in connection with the legionary work.

WEDNESDAY: 5:30 p.m.
Sodality Room

The main aim of the Legion is to bring salvation to souls to enlighten those who are in darkness and in the shadow of death to inflame those who are lukewarm and to bring back souls who have gone astray.

The Legion of Mary was first started in St. Peter’s Parish in the 1960’s. A few Parishioners joined under the Spiritual Leadership of the late Rev Father Francis Barjau s.j. Gradually more members joined, and today we have Legionaries on our Rolls, as Active Members.
These undertake works of mercy, appointed by the President, at the Weekly Meetings, such as visiting Families, and recruiting them as Auxiliaries (or Praying Members) and Housebound in their homes Visiting the sick in hospitals. Meeting devotees who come to the Mount, and distributing Catholic Literature to them.
Other works undertaken, include special cases of persons aided by other organizations, recommended by us to receive monetary or other relief for hospital and other expenses.
Arrangements have been made for children from the weaker sections, to be placed in Special Homes for them and occasional visits are paid to them in far off areas of Thane and Vasai.

One of the important rules is confidentiality of Reports given at the Weekly Meetings, concerning visits to families during which members are confided with problems occurring in the home.

Our goal is Personal Sanctification, for ourselves and others.

A weekly meeting is held every Wednesday at 5.30 pm in the Sodality Room of the Parish. As the Praesidium of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we welcome you to join us in the work we undertake, for our Blessed Mother and her Son.

The weekly meeting of our sister Praesidium Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament also meet every Thursday at 6.00 pm in the Sodality Room in our Parish.
